We would like to announce the first of four guest lectures that will take place over the first half of 2022 in our new “STGS Colloquium” series. This time around, the series will focus on nuclear history (more info on Prof. Rentetzi’s ERC project “Living with Radiation” here).

On Thursday, January 20, 18:00 CET, Dr. Véronique Stenger from the University of Geneva will present a talk on the development of radiation protection measures in uranium mines.

Towards a Socio-History of Occupational Risk:

Logics and Conflicts in the Development of Radiation Protection in Uranium Mines

While the radioprotection of other categories of workers was being significantly extended nationally and internationally since the 1950s, most of the countries extracting uranium had not adopted any radiation protection legislation for miners until the end of the 1960s. Using risk as an analytical category, Dr. Stenger will examine the socio-genesis of radioprotection in uranium mines, crossing national and international scales.

We invite everyone interested to join us via Zoom – please register here.

There will also be a very limited amount of seats available at FAU’s Kollegienhaus. If you want to participate in person, please send an email to bjoern.bosserhoff@fau.de.
